Success! Hundreds of High School Students from Various Cities in East Java Have Participated in the 9th ESA’s Anniversary English Competition.

Malang, August 31, 2024 – The atmosphere at Al-Qolam University Malang was filled with burning enthusiasm this Saturday. The Auditorium Building on the 3rd floor of the campus witnessed the celebration of the 9th anniversary of the Student Association of the English Language Education Study Program (HMJ) of TBIG, which was celebrated by holding an English Olympiad event entitled “To Be the Success, You Should Do the Best!”.

This event was solemnly opened through a ceremonial singing of Indonesia Raya which echoed throughout the room. The spirit of independence that was still felt at the end of August further added to the nuance of patriotism among the participants and guests who attended.

Not only as a celebration, this English Competition was also an event to explore potential and hone students’ abilities in English, a very important competency in this era of globalization.

Ning Siti Aisyah, S.Ag., M.A., as Vice Chancellor 3 of Al-Qolam University, had the honor of opening this event. In his opening speech, he conveyed how important the role of English as an international language is in forming a competitive young generation in the global arena.

This is an honor for me, because this morning I sang Indonesia Raya twice, first at an activity that was also related to the internal organization on the outdoor stage earlier, second in this auditorium with all of you, what makes us proud is also the younger participants and also the teachers who are present today, attending the competition with the status of our institution has become a UNIVERSITY which in the initial plan we targeted the ideal to be realized in 2030 but the sweet reality is that it was realized much faster, at the end of 2023. This English Olympiad is not just a competition, but also a place for students to show their best abilities. In accordance with our theme today, ‘To Be the Success, You Should Do the Best!’, success can only be achieved with the best efforts that we do,” she said enthusiastically which was also followed by applause from all the participants present.

On that occasion, Ning Siti Aisyah also expressed her high appreciation to HMJ Prodi TBIG who had organized this event very well. “Hopefully with activities like this, HMJ Prodi TBIG will be more prominent and able to produce more outstanding students who can make Al-Qolam University proud, the presence of you and the participants in this competition is a source of pride for us, and the participation of all the participants in the competition is a victory in itself regardless of the results later,” she added.

After the official opening by Vice Rector 3, the event continued with a speech from Mr. Makki, the chairman of the 9th Anniversary committee. In his speech, Makki expressed his gratitude and deep appreciation to all parties who have supported the implementation of this event. “We welcome and thank the entire academic community of Al-Qolam University, sponsors, donors, and all participants who have attended, both from Malang and outside Malang. Without your support and participation, this event would not have run as successfully as today,” he said with great respect. This speech emphasized the importance of collaboration and contribution from various parties in making the 9th anniversary celebration of the TBIG Study Program Student Association a success, while also increasing the intimacy and spirit of togetherness among all involved.

Mr. Hanif Maulaniam Sholah, M.Pd., as the Head of the English Language Education Study Program (TBIG), continued the series of events by cutting the tumpeng as a symbol of gratitude and hope that the 9th English Competition can run smoothly and successfully, and become an inspiring momentum for all participants to continue to improve their English language skills.

The participants were then guided by the committee to move and prepare to go to each competition branch room, each competition branch was designed to test the participants’ English skills comprehensively, starting from storytelling skills, public speaking, to understanding English structure and grammar well through the Reading-Writing Test.

This English Competition was attended by hundreds of students from various schools in East Java, participants in this competition were attended by more than 100 participants where the participants came from schools from various cities such as Sumenep, Banyuwangi and Probolinggo. They competed in various competition branches such as Storytelling, Speech and also English Olympiad.

One of the competition participants, Salman Mevlevi from MA Nurul Jadid, admitted that he was very enthusiastic about participating in this event. “This is a very valuable experience for me. Not only can I test my English skills, but I can also learn from other participants who are also very talented,” he said.

Even the group of participants from the Nurulhuda Pakandangan Sumenep Institute attended the day before the competition, the committees on duty were quite responsive and received satisfactory service, Ramdani said ”my friends and I have been present since 4 o’clock last Friday, thank God a decent resting place has been provided for us”. In addition, this event is also a place for friendship and networking between students. They not only compete, but also share experiences and knowledge about learning English. This is expected to increase learning motivation and competitive spirit among students.

The tense atmosphere of the competition was increasingly felt throughout the event, but this atmosphere seemed to be balanced by the presence of various UMKM stands available in front of the competition building. There were three main stands that attracted the attention of participants and visitors. The first stand, Geprek Solid, offered a variety of delicious food choices that were perfect for filling the participants’ energy. No less interesting, the Aice Ice Cream Stand served a variety of fresh ice creams that were a favorite of many people, especially in the hot weather. Meanwhile, the cosmetic stand from Azarine beauty products also enlivened the event by offering a variety of skin care products for men and women, attracting the interest of those who wanted to maintain their appearance during and after the competition. The presence of these stands not only added to the excitement of the event, but also provided an opportunity for participants and visitors to relax and enjoy the atmosphere in between the intense competition. The peak of this event was marked by the announcement of the winners from each competition category. The winners not only received awards in the form of trophies and certificates, but also the opportunity to take part in an English training program organized by the university. This program is expected to further improve their English skills, so that they are ready to compete at a higher level, both nationally and internationally. The winners include:

One of the winners of the Storytelling Contest had a special impression in his umpteenth participation, “Participating in this year’s competition was more challenging and exciting because there were so many participants and it was held throughout East Java.” Irma ramadania hakim added, “I didn’t expect it, because last year I didn’t make it to the top 3, now I’m the champion, I’m really happy,” she added.

The success of this event cannot be separated from the solid and supportive cooperation of all the committee members, where each individual played an active and responsive role in carrying out their respective job descriptions.

The English Competition, which was held to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the HMJ TBIG Study Program, Al-Qolam University of Malang, succeeded in showing that the spirit of competition and maximum effort are the keys to success. With the spirit of “To Be the Success, You Should Do the Best!”, it is hoped that this event can motivate all students to continue to excel and give their best in every effort.
