THE LOSS OF THE CULTURE OF PILLING RICE WITH A LESUNG IN KAPUR VILLAGE, PONTIANAK, WEST KALIMANTAN
Indonesia is a country that is known as an archipelago country, and is also known as a country that is diverse in ethnic culture, traditional tools, customs, languages and religions. In Indonesia there are millions of cultures, ranging from dance, music, performing arts, batik motifs, folklore. and others. We currently live in the era of globalization, an era where our culture, arts, customs are competing to face the current era.
Indonesia’s wealth is a legacy from the founders of independence that we must protect and care for. Even though the era has begun to be different, but Indonesia’s wealth must be maintained, so that Indonesian culture does not disappear due to the flow of globalization, so that our culture and traditions are lost and forgotten. This threat must be resolved for all of us. There are two factors that cause this, namely:
a. Internal factors, today’s successors seem to be lulled by modern life, so they forget the values passed down by their own ancestors. Now we can see, there are already people who have forgotten the culture of their ancestors.
b. External factors, the rapid flow of information from outside also affects the erosion of Indonesian culture. Especially the western culture that is growing in our country, western cultures are not in accordance with Indonesian values. This is also a bad thing for the Indonesian nation, now we have feel that many cultures are not in accordance with the values of the Indonesian nation, as if their culture is our own, the situation is truly critical in our country.
One of Indonesia’s forgotten cultures is pounding rice using a mortar. On the one hand, the development of the world of science and technology that is so amazing has indeed brought extraordinary benefits to the advancement of human civilization. Types of work that previously required considerable physical abilities, are now relatively able to be replaced by automatic machine devices. On the other hand, humans cannot deceive themselves about the fact that technology has brought havoc and misery to modern humans.
In ancient times, the culture of the post-rice harvest community in producing rice using simple tools can be seen in the picture above. The rice production process is carried out by pounding or rice seeds are placed on a concave stone and beaten using a piece of wood the size of a bamboo. People can gather which creates a sense of brotherhood and togetherness..However, with advances in technology, pounding rice in this way is no longer used, as was the case in Kapur Pontianak Village, West Kalimantan. The people there no longer use these traditional tools to pound rice because they choose machines to turn rice into rice, even in mortars. was no longer found there.
The loss of the traditional culture of pounding rice in Kapur Village is very concerning because this culture is a cultural heritage that must be preserved. Especially for young people as the nation’s successors, young people should not feel ashamed to preserve their own culture, because if our culture loses its own culture it means we lose the characteristics and identity of our own nation.Therefore, let’s protect and preserve the heritage of pounding rice using a mortar as one of Indonesia’s cultural assets while preserving it and introducing it to foreign countries as one of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
